Vianden Castle

Indispensable
Vianden Castle

Vianden Castle was built between the 11th and 14th centuries on the remains of a Roman fort and a Carolingian refuge. It is one of the largest and most impressive feudal residences of the Romanesque and Gothic periods in Europe. Until the early 15th century, it served as the seat of the powerful Counts of Vianden, who maintained close ties with the French royal family and the German imperial court.

In 1820, during the reign of King William I of the Netherlands, the castle was sold off piece by piece, falling into ruin. It wasn’t until 1977, when the Grand Ducal family of Luxembourg transferred it to the state, that restoration began. Today, Vianden Castle stands as a cultural and historical monument of regional and European importance.
